“r.i.p.”

Robin Williams, beloved comedian, commited suicide this week.  So sad.

In the wake of this loss, I was dismayed by how many people took his death as a chance to announce that he was going to hell.  One Facebooker said she couldn’t post “rest in peace” because he would not know any peace; he was a sinner, you see, and suicide was just one more sin on his long list, so, yep, no peace for him.

What is wrong with you people??  You say  “rest in peace” to honor his family, to offer kind closure to the living.  How dare you take to social forums to defame a man, any man, whose family and friends grieve for him?!

When you Facebook preachers die, should I skip the “RIP” because your lack of kindness for the grieving of others is decidely unholy?  Should I neglect to say anything warm for your remaining loved ones because you were so hellbent on your path of self-righteousness?

No? You want me to comfort your loved ones and say a little prayer for their peace when you die?  Of course I will, because that is what we do for others…and you should do the same: comfort the living, say kind words in their time of loss.
