With Valentine’s fast approaching…

As Valentine’s Day lurks just around the corner to nip me on the ass, I was thinking about some of my favorite tunes for a variety of love-induced occasions.

I’ll share a few with you

Stay or Leave, Dave Matthews, a really touching lament song of love that slipped through their fingers…

All I Want is You, U2.  Title says it all.

Show Me Your Soul, Red Hot Chili Peppers.  A classic and you can shake your booty to it.

Strangelove, Depeche Mode. Twisted and sexy.

Kinda I Want To, Nine Inch Nails.  Temptation is delicious.

Submission, Sex Pistols.  I’m on a submarine mission for you, baby!

I Just Want to Have Something to Do, Ramones.  Any song that works “chicken vindaloo” into a rhyme somewhere around “I just want to be with you” is noteworthy.

Shitlist, L7.  If I’m thinking of you and listening to this, we have probably broken up and it’s beyond repair, and there’s a strong chance I’m going to kick your spleen up into your sinuses so just stay away.  Send chocolates and flowers, but stay away.

I could go on. So many songs for love, so many songs for heartbreak, too…so it makes me miss the “mix tape,” the compilation you made for your beloved or he made for you back in the day, each song specially selected to convey a message of love and yearning.  I loved making them, I loved receiving them.  I want the modern day version of the mix tape.  The mix CD.  The mix playlist.  Whatever.  That tradition of the careful selection of songs for your significant other just can’t evaporate in our MP3 society of music we rent from Napster and don’t even own.  Sigh.
